Favorite Reading

My favorite book that we read this school year was The Odyssey by Homer. I have not liked Greek mythology books or movies in the past so I was shocked by how much I enjoyed reading this book. I really liked the way the plot was paced and how the story progressed. My favorite part of the book was when we got to learn what happened to Odysseus before he was trapped on the island with Calypso. I can see why this story has lasted through many generations. My least favorite reading was the poetry section. Although I did like most of the poems we read, I preferred focusing on a certain book for a few weeks rather than looking at multiple poems per class. Overall I really enjoyed the things we did in class this year. There was not one book that we read that I could not stand to read.

  1. Overall, most of the readings for this year seemed great. I chose the Odyssey as my least favorite book, but I still enjoyed parts of it. You pointed out that you liked focusing on one book rather than multiple poems, and I agree with you.

  2. The Oyssey was a complete miss for me, I couldn't stand it, personally. Simply put, Odysseus won too much. There wasn't any suspense because of his infallibility. The Great Gatsby was amazing, though, as it was sort of a reverse. Odysseus was against all odds and won, and Gatsby had everything going for him and lost.

  3. I'm going to have to agree with Julian The Odyssey was not particularly my favorite, probably because it is a tragedy and I was just disappointed with that result. I personally enjoyed The Great Gatsby the most.

  4. Same Jadyn! I absolutely loved the Odyssey and its writing style. I do, however, disagree with you on your least favorite unit of the year, because I think that reading all those short poems at the beginning of the year really prepped us for the year of analyzing written works. I also think that it gave us an insight on different writing styles that we would not have discovered on our own. Great post!

  8. I wasn't here when we read the Odyssey, but I've read it before, and can see why you enjoy it. It honestly is a pretty interesting text.

  9. The Odyssey, wow. I would definitely have to disagree with you there because I couldn't stand reading the Odyssey personally. It probably had to do with the ancient Greek mythology format in which it was written.

  10. My favorite book was the Odyssey as well. I found it to be very interesting in the fact that there were many developed characters, and you got to know many of them quite well.

  12. Even though I see why you could like The Odyssey, I don't agree with you. I put The Odyssey as my least favorite because I found it very confusing and hard to understand and keep up, leading it to sometimes get boring.
